How to connect

Claude
- 1In Budgeteer, open Settings, then Connections, and copy your connector address.
- 2In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, and choose Add custom connector.
- 3Paste the address and continue.
- 4Sign in to Budgeteer when asked, pick the household to share, and approve read-only access.

ChatGPT
- 1In Budgeteer, open Settings, then Connections, and copy your connector address.

Other assistants
- 1In Budgeteer, open Settings, then Connections, and copy your connector address.
- 2Find where your client adds a remote MCP server (often under Integrations, Connectors, or Tools).
- 3Paste the address. The client will discover the sign-in flow on its own.
- 4Sign in to Budgeteer when asked, pick the household to share, and approve read-only access.
Any client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in will work.
What it can do, and what it never will

It cannot
- Add, edit, or delete anything
- Move money or change a budget
- See another household, even one you belong to but did not share
- See your bank credentials or account numbers
- Give financial advice; it reports what your budget says

The connection is built so that the least amount of trust does the most work. Here is exactly what that means.
No password shared
You sign in on Budgeteer, never in the assistant. It receives a scoped token for the one household you chose.
Read-only, by design
It can look and explain, and that is all. Adding, editing, deleting, and moving money are not available to it, and your questions are never stored.
Yours to end, any time
Settings, Connections shows each assistant and when it last asked for anything. Disconnect there, or change your password, and access stops immediately.
One thing to know before you connect: whatever you ask about, your assistant's provider sees. If you ask about your grocery spending, that figure goes to them, the same way anything you type into a chat does. Budgeteer never sends anything the assistant did not ask for, and never sends account numbers or credentials, but the choice to share is yours to make.
Some apps with no public API are reachable only through community-built connectors that ask for your real email, password, and two-factor code. Budgeteer's connection never sees your password. The assistant gets a scoped token you can revoke, and nothing else.

The assistant connection is included with every plan, monthly or annual, at no extra cost. Every member of your household can connect their own assistant.
An assistant that supports connectors
This is not an enterprise feature. Claude supports custom connectors on every plan, including Free. ChatGPT and other assistants support them on their paid tiers. Any client that speaks the open Model Context Protocol will work.
Questions, answered.
- Does this cost extra?
- No. The assistant connection is included with your Budgeteer subscription. You will need an assistant that supports connectors; Claude offers that on its Free plan.
- Can the assistant change my budget?
- No. The connection is read-only by design. Adding transactions, moving money, and editing categories all still happen in Budgeteer.
- Does Budgeteer send my data to the AI company?
- Only what your assistant asks for, in response to your question. If you ask about groceries, the grocery figures go to the assistant. Nothing is sent in the background, and account numbers and credentials are never included.
- What if I share a budget with my family?
- Each person connects their own assistant and chooses which household to share when approving. A connection only ever sees the one household it was approved for.
- How do I disconnect it?
- Go to Settings, Connections, and choose Disconnect next to the assistant. Changing your password or turning off two-factor authentication also revokes every connection automatically.
- Is the math the assistant reports the same as in the app?
- Yes. It reports the same figures you see in the app, and it is given Budgeteer's own definitions of budgeting terms, so it explains a number the way the app would.
- Which assistants work?
- Claude and ChatGPT are the ones we test with. Any assistant that supports remote MCP connectors with OAuth sign-in should work the same way.
- Does it work on my phone?
- Yes, once connected the assistant can answer from any device you use it on. The connection itself is made from the assistant's settings, which may be easier on a computer.
